THE LOOK SUMMER 2008

2008-2009 Summer Fashion Guide

There is, once again, a lot of choice this summer when it comes to choosing new pieces to add to your summer wardrobe or in some cases, replacing an old wardrobe collection of pieces that just don't fit anymore or they are faded and falling apart, especially if you have had the same wardrobe for the last 5-10 years. Whilst there are key pieces in your wardrobe that do not date, there are a lot of pieces that I can assure you are in your wardrobe that do date. This can certainly happen if you are wearing suits, skirts, dresses and pants that were purchased 8-15 years ago. You can look a lot older than you actually are if you have not updated these pieces. Styles do come and go but if they do come back, they are always altered in some way so the old clothes that you are keeping will not be in vogue again, they will still look like you have had them for 8-15 years, possibly longer.

Do the words frumpy, mumsy and daggy come to mind? If you feel that way about your clothes, then replace them with fabulous new ones that actually make you feel and look great. As I always say projection is perception. So ask yourself are you happy with what you are projecting? If not then simple, change it. Everything and everyone needs updating every now and then. You feel fantastic when you are happy with the finished product.

Safari Look

The Safari look is hot this season with various cargo pants, shorts and skirts in stores. When selecting styles in any of these pieces remember the basic guidelines with lengths and pockets.

Shirt Dress

The shirtdress is another look this season which can give quite a masculine appearance. When accessorising, choose pieces that are going to soften the look.

Maxi Dress

The maxi dresses are back again so if you don't feel that your legs are one of your best assets or they are past their show off date, then you can still feel cool and comfortable in a dress for the hotter months to come. Pay careful attention to both fabric and style as some fabrics will not breath and you will not feel cool or comfortable at all, quite the opposite. Necklines are a very important factor to consider when choosing a dress and also particularly with summer dresses. Chose correctly for your body shape.

Shorts

The selection of shorts is huge this summer and I think we may need them judging on the spring season so far. The good news is that they come in all sorts of lengths and styles.

Jean shorts, skirts and the cuffed cropped jean are everywhere and if chosen in the correct style and shade of denim for your body shape can be a very youthful addition to your wardrobe. They are easy to match up with other basic or flamboyant pieces. The denim jacket is also on display everywhere. I do not think that this piece ever went out of vogue although the styles have changed through the years. With the correct layering of other pieces and accessories you can utilise a denim jacket in your summer wardrobe.

Shoes

There are a few popular comebacks that are slightly altered in style to adapt to our more modern look. The first style is the roman-like style. Definitely not sleek looking but in the right adapted style they can look great. The wedges are back and these are the best choice for comfort along when you require height. The height of this shoe varies and you can choose a height according to your comfort factor. The choice of colours is amazing and there is bound to be a colour or groovy print to match every ensemble you have.

Shoes continued/...

Platforms are also around but are not built for comfort. They are purely built for looks so if you are off out to dinner where you are sitting down they are a great choice. The ballet shoes look great teamed up with your casual pieces but beware if you require a bit more height these shoes can create a dumpy look, if teamed with the wrong pieces, depending on your body shape and height.

Colours

Colours this season varies with a lot of choice from subtle earthy tones of beige and chocolate to clean crisp white. Be wary of the more subtle tones if you choose to wear them completely on their own without a more vibrant colour. Depending on your hair colour and skin tone, you could be adding years to your age or look quite unwell. Colour is extremely important and choosing the right colour is vital for a perfect end result. There are also a lot of really vibrant colours out this season. Coral, electric blue, electric green, orange to canary yellow just to name a few. These colours when combined with a more subtle tone can look great, as long as you don't over do it with too much colour.

Less is definitely more in many cases. Metallics are probably the biggest pick this season and I have added them to my wardrobe colour swatches. The main metallics are silver, bronze and gold. There are various shades around so again it is important to get your colour right as the shades of bronze can go from more brown/gold to rust/yellow and you may not suit both. Add metallics to your wardrobe in evening wear, shoes or a funky top for daywear. Metallics can look great worn with clean, crisp white.

Prints

Prints around this season are stripes, abstract florals and of course the always flattering geometrics. Do pay attention to where you place prints on your body as we are either looking to maximise or minimise our body shape. It is all about balance and if the balance is not right then nothing will look right.

Big tip for this Summer

Pay attention to the small details so that the overall result is nothing short of flattering and fabulous!

Something To Think About Before You Plan Your Fabulous New Wardrobe...

Have you ever wondered why you still need to call a stylist after purchasing a style book?

Vania's Tip

After one appointment with me you will have retained more information on your body shape, colours and fabrics than you would after reading that book you purchased. You also would have enjoyed a wonderful shopping experience whilst purchasing some wonderful clothes which make you look and feel great. The reason people do not get out of a style book what they want and expect is because the style book is not written specifically for you. It is written for millions of other people as well.

No two body shapes are exactly the same, we are all unique so if you are looking for a personal plan for you then book a styling session with me and that session will be all about you and only you. Save hundreds of wasted dollars and time by getting a winning formula for your wardrobe in one styling session. If you love the experience then book again for the following season as my regular clients do.
